Microsoft Data Protection Manager is a solution from Microsoft that provides centralized data backup for data centers or branch offices. By design, it continuously backs up files that have changed at the byte level to a disk storage system. This disk based backup can then subsequently be backed up to a traditional tape media system. By employing this methodology, an organization can realize the benefits of being able to provide a very fast and reliable recovery from disk. One doesn’t need to locate and then mount tapes before restoring a file. But it also provides a medium for disaster recovery by backing up the disk data to tape.

The system is designed to protect your Windows servers, workstations and even notebook devices. It gives you the speed you need to restore data without interrupting your normal network operations, and Data Protection Manager’s tape support gives your organization long term, off-site storage. The system can be an essential part of any strategy to address either contractual or regulatory data retention requirements.

Microsoft Data Protection Manager Version 2012
Microsoft Data Projection Manager Version 2012 includes a number of improvements including a new central management system that makes it easier for network administrators to oversee and control the system. DPM Version 2012 also uses a system called Changed Block Tracking which transfers only blocks that have changed. The result is improved backup performance and it lowers the workload on the server itself. And DPM Version 2012 allows administrators to exclude virtual computer pagefiles from the incremental backup jobs. This greatly improves storage usage as well as overall backup performance.

Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2010
